Union Station Homeless Services has been an essential presence within the community for nearly half a century, spearheading homeless services across the San Gabriel Valley.
Covering an area inhabited by over 1.5 million individuals across more than 36 cities and communities, their core mission remains unwavering: facilitating the journey of individuals and families out of homelessness, aiding them in rebuilding their lives.
Originating in the 1970s through the compassionate efforts of a local faith group profoundly moved by the dire circumstances of those living on the streets in their community, Union Station was initially established as a church-led initiative. Transitioning into a secular nonprofit organization in 1984, with an independent board of directors and a dedicated full-time staff, the organization shifted its focus from providing immediate emergency aid, such as meals and temporary shelters, to a more comprehensive service model.
Today, Union Station is a leading homeless services agency in the San Gabriel Valley, renowned for the caliber of its services and its steadfast commitment to the ‘Housing First Model.’ This progressive approach prioritizes the provision of permanent housing as a foundational step, offering supplementary wrap-around services to assist individuals experiencing homelessness in stabilizing their lives and enhancing their overall well-being.
In conjunction with its emphasis on permanent housing solutions, Union Station fosters authentic relationships with its clients, acknowledging their autonomy in charting their path toward personal well-being. Their staff engages as partners, actively listening, learning, and accompanying individuals, acknowledging their agency in determining their journey.
This innovative model acknowledges the role of trauma, systemic breakdowns, and the absence of adequate support in pushing individuals toward extreme vulnerability and homelessness. However, it remains rooted in the belief that human beings possess inherent resilience and, with appropriate support systems, can progress toward stability and wellness.
Since adopting the Housing First model and its commitment to trauma-informed services, Union Station has achieved a remarkable 97% success rate in housing individuals who have remained securely housed, ensuring they do not return to homelessness. This outcome underscores their dedication to providing effective and compassionate care while fostering enduring solutions for those experiencing homelessness in their community.
