About Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is a research & development center located in California, owned & sponsored by NASA & managed by the California Institute of Technology.

Their primary focus is building & operating robotic spacecraft for planetary exploration, as well as conducting Earth-orbit and astronomy missions, as well as operating the Deep Space Network.

JPL is working on several significant projects, including Mars 2020, the Mars Science Laboratory, Juno, SMAP, NuSTAR, and the upcoming Psyche asteroid orbiter. Additionally, JPL manages the Small-Body Database and provides data and publications for all small Solar System bodies.

Highlights

The Jet Propulsion Lab is the United States’ only Federally funded research and development center for NASA. They are leaders in researching robotics for space exploration. They are looking to focus on missions in space to learn more about our universe by doing things like examining the surface of Venus and the oceans of Jupiter’s moon.

That being said, what they offer is education to the public. They offer lectures that the public can access, such as “Perseverance: Two Years On Mars” and “Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) Mission.”

They also offer images, audio, and video that anyone can access on their website.

The JPL also has competitions for local high school students. A couple of events the JPL host is the Science Bowl and FIRST Robotics Competition.

Their vibe is wonderful!

JPL’s First Female Director wants the lab to “Dare Might Things – Together.” Dr. Laurie Lesion has high hopes and a powerful direction for JPL. She was one of the first women to advise two presidents on space policy. She also served as the first female president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, and now she finds herself leading the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as the first-ever woman director of the institution.
